What is Web Directory and how do they help ?
A web directory is a directory on the World Wide Web and helps in linking to other web sites and categorizing those links based on keywords. It lists web sites by category and subcategory.
Web directories helps in getting traffic from the directories where you are listed in 3 ways :-
- Firstly it helps to get click-through traffic, means that anyone who ends up on the directory page will be able to see your web site and information and hence they can visit your website.
- The second way is indexing your site. It means directories will begin to index the pages of your web site once they find the links to it so they can come back again and again and hence brings traffic to your website .
- And the third way is increasing your ranking on the search engines themselves as they find the volume of links and references to your web site.
What is difference between a Directory and a Search Engine ?
- A Search Engine is a machine – or a robot whereas a Web Directory is a directory on the World Wide Web and helps in linking to other web sites and categorizing those links based on keywords.
- Mostly, humans compile directories. On the other hand, a human may program algorithms for a search engine, but humans have nothing to do with your site when the spider is visiting your site or when the engine is ranking your pages
- A search engine has a very large database whereas a directory will only store a link to the home page of each site and a description.
- Search engines can take the description either from some of the sentences on the web page or from the description meta tag. On the other hand a directory will take the description from your submission information.

Search Engine positioning is the process to get high ranking in search engine result pages by using specific keywords or keyword phrases. It is possible that your website may appear in good position in search engine result pages but it is beneficial only if you get good position of your website with your targeted keywords. Sometimes people also called it search engine optimization. But it is not actually SEO process instead it can be considered as part of search engine optimization
